Different Finishes of Slatestone

  • Honed: In this, the surface layer of the stone is buffed to give it a smooth appearance. It provides a smooth matte look without the shine, giving your space a slick look. This is popularly used for kitchens and backsplash.
  • Polished: To achieve this finish, the texture is rubbed to a smooth high gloss shine that exudes a mirror-like finish. It makes it an excellent choice for indoor flooring, and kitchen and bathroom countertops.
  • Tumbled: This finish is achieved by tumbling the stone in a specific machine with coarse materials, giving it a weathered appearance. This finish is used for walling and other outdoor applications.
  • Brushed: A metal material is brushed to the stone’s surface to give it a textured appearance.
  • Sandblasted: Here, the surface of the stone is rubbed with sand, giving it a rough and textured look. It is used for enhancing the slip-resistant quality of the surfaces. It is perfect for outdoor use like pools and patios.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

Known for their distinctive appearance, textured surface and exceptional durability, Slatestone tiles are an appropriate choice for both indoor and outdoor design projects. With some simple installation and maintenance measures, you can rest assured that your Slate surfaces will look incredible for years.

Here are some tips for installing and maintaining Slatestone:

Installation Tips

  • Set up the surface: Make sure that the space where Slatestone tiles will be installed is clean, level and free from stone dust or debris. A proper and architecturally sound base will lay a solid surface for your Slatestone tiles and offer an even and comfortable surface.
  • Use a heavy-duty adhesive: A strong adhesive is important when laying tiles over existing ones or on a wooden substrate. It holds the structure in place and prevents the tiles from moving over time. Choose a high-performance tile adhesive suitable for Slatestone installations for outstanding results. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper mixing proportions and application.
  • Grouting: Grouting: Select a grout material specifically designed for Slatestone. Avoid using acidic or harsh cleaners before you begin grouting to prevent damage to the surface. Ensure the tiles are set in place, wait for a minimum of 24 hours after applying the adhesive for it to dry completely. Choose a neutral grout matching the tones of your Slatestone. Scrape off the extra before it starts to solidify.
  • Sealing: Sealing: Before and after grouting, apply a penetrating sealer designed for Slatestone. Sealing creates a shield and helps protect the stone from stains, moisture or any other damage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or installers’ recommendations for frequency of application. The general rule of thumb is every 2 years.
  • Allow for natural movement: Due to its inherent properties, Slate may expand and contract in response to fluctuations in humidity and temperature. Leave proper and consistent spacing where expansion joints are required and allow space for this movement.

Maintenance Tips

  • Clean regularly: Sweep or vacuum your Slate floors regularly to keep them clean and shining. Don’t let dirt or debris get collected on the surface. Occasionally clean with a soft cloth or sponge and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Don’t use any harsh chemicals as they can strip off the stone's sheen over time. Also, avoid acidic or vinegar-based cleaners as they can cause etching of the surface and damage its appearance.
  • Take prompt action for spills: Clean up wine, vinegar and citrus juice spills immediately to prevent staining on Marble. Blot with a soft absorbent cloth or paper tissue to dab the excess liquid. Don’t clean vigorously as it can spread the stain.
  • Avoid scrubbing: Hard washing natural stones is not recommended. Use a soft cloth or a non-scratchy brush for cleaning. Avoid scrubbing with rough cleaning pads, as they can scrap the stone and damage its surface over time.
  • Reseal periodically: Slatestone tiles need periodic resealing to retain their stunning exterior texture and sheen. Depending on the type of Slate and whether it's installed indoors or outdoors, you may need to reseal the stone every 1-2 years. Follow the sealer’s instructions or seek professional help for accurate results.
  • Protect from heavy load: While Slate floors are exceptionally strong, still avoid dragging heavy objects or furniture across its surface to prevent chipping or cracking. Use carpets and mats to preserve and prolong the life of your Slate pavers and tiles.
  • For outdoor use: If you have Slate floors installed outdoors on your patio, front porch or balcony, ensure that they are of the correct thickness according to the use of the space. Also, ensure the right surface finish so that your Slate tiles can withstand outdoor conditions.

By following these simple installation and maintenance tips, you can keep your Slate floors in well-maintained for decades.
