How to Seal and Maintain Stacked Stone?

Natural stone is porous and stacked stone are no exception - the raw, open face of a natural split surface will absorb moisture and staining compounds during installation and in ongoing use if left unsealed. We recommend engaging a qualified professional for all stacked stone installation work. The following gives a general overview of the key stages.

Before Installation

Dip-sealing all faces and edges of stacked stone tiles before installation is strongly recommended. The adhesive and grout used in the installation process can stain an unsealed natural stone face; pre-sealing eliminates this risk.

After Installation

Apply a penetrating natural stone sealer to the full surface of the installed stacked stone once installation is complete and the surface has been cleaned. Allow full cure time before the surface is exposed to moisture or cleaning agents.

Routine Cleaning

• A pH-neutral stone cleaner diluted in warm water, applied with a soft brush and rinsed thoroughly, is sufficient for routine maintenance of stack stone tiles.
• A soft brush is more effective than a flat mop for cleaning stacked stones surface due to the surface relief.
• Acid-based cleaners such as vinegar, citrus products and low-pH bathroom sprays etch the stone surface permanently and must not be used.
• Bleach and ammonia-based cleaners should also not be used on natural stone.

For exterior stacked stone surfaces, periodic inspection of adhesion and joint condition is recommended.
