About Stacked Stone Walling

Stacked stone walling has long been used in Australian residential and commercial construction, valued for the depth, texture and natural surface character that no manufactured cladding material replicates.

What is Stacked Stone?

Stack stone is a wall cladding format in which individual natural stone pieces are cut and arranged in overlapping horizontal layers to produce a continuous, deeply textured surface. Stone Centre's stack stone tiles are supplied as pre-cut mesh-backed units, where each unit holds a set of individual stone pieces bonded at consistent depth and spacing. The result is a surface that reads as hand-stacked but installs as a single piece.

The surface character of stack stone comes directly from the stone type used. Each piece carries the natural texture and tonal variation of the base material.

Ethically Sourced

Our stacked stone tile range is ethically sourced across our supply chain, allowing you to choose natural stone walling products that are both durable and a responsible long-term choice for residential and commercial projects.

Why Choose Stack Stone Tiles from Stone Centre?

Stone Centre stocks a range of stacked stone tiles and stackstone cladding across Australia. Here is what distinguishes our range:

Natural Stone, Not Manufactured - Our stacked stone tile range is made from natural stone. The surface character, tonal variation and stacked stone texture are properties of the material itself, not applied finishes.

Where Is Stacked Stone Used?

Stacked stone wall cladding suits a wide range of interior and exterior wall surfaces. The mesh-backed format makes it practical across different project types and scales.

Interior

Feature walls - The natural split face and tonal variation of stack stones tiles create a surface with genuine depth and visual presence that shifts in character with the light.

Fireplace surrounds - Natural stacked stone is non-combustible and holds its surface character in heat-exposed settings.

Kitchen and living area walls - The layered texture and tonal movement of stack stones bring warmth and surface interest to kitchen, dining and living wall surfaces.

Shower and bathroom walls - Stacked stone tile create a distinctive wall surface in shower and bathroom applications.

Exterior

Façade walling - The format suits larger exterior façade surfaces, delivering consistent natural stone texture across a wide area.

Feature walls - The raw face and surface character of stack stones bring visual weight and presence to exterior courtyard, garden and alfresco wall settings.

Retaining walls - Stacked stone cladding gives garden retaining wall surfaces a layered, natural finish that adds visual weight to structural elements.

How to Seal and Maintain Stacked Stone?

Natural stone is porous and stacked stone are no exception - the raw, open face of a natural split surface will absorb moisture and staining compounds during installation and in ongoing use if left unsealed. We recommend engaging a qualified professional for all stacked stone installation work. The following gives a general overview of the key stages.

Before Installation

Dip-sealing all faces and edges of stacked stone tiles before installation is strongly recommended. The adhesive and grout used in the installation process can stain an unsealed natural stone face; pre-sealing eliminates this risk.

After Installation

Apply a penetrating natural stone sealer to the full surface of the installed stacked stone once installation is complete and the surface has been cleaned. Allow full cure time before the surface is exposed to moisture or cleaning agents.

Routine Cleaning

  • A pH-neutral stone cleaner diluted in warm water, applied with a soft brush and rinsed thoroughly, is sufficient for routine maintenance of stack stone tiles.
  • A soft brush is more effective than a flat mop for cleaning stacked stones surface due to the surface relief.
  • Acid-based cleaners such as vinegar, citrus products and low-pH bathroom sprays etch the stone surface permanently and must not be used.
  • Bleach and ammonia-based cleaners should also not be used on natural stone.

For exterior stacked stone surfaces, periodic inspection of adhesion and joint condition is recommended.
