About Sandstone Pavers & Tiles

Sandstone has been shaping traditional and contemporary architectural designs across Australia for centuries.

What is Sandstone?

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed when sand grains are compressed and bonded together over geological time. The mineral composition of the bonding agent determines each sandstone variety's characteristic tonal range and surface character. The result is a naturally dense material with a grained texture and warm, earthy tones that vary from piece to piece. No two sandstone tiles or pavers are identical, a quality inherent to natural stone that gives natural sandstone paving and flooring installations their distinctive surface depth.

Ethically Sourced, Eco-Friendly

Our range of sandstone flooring is ethically sourced and helps you make an eco-friendly choice without compromising on quality. Long-lasting and visually strong, outdoor sandstone tiles and pavers are a consistent natural stone choice for residential and commercial projects across Australia.

Sandstone Range & How We Source It

Stone Centre has been supplying sandstone tiles and pavers to Australian residential, trade and commercial projects for many years. We carry tiles, pavers and copings across our Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne warehouses, stocked and ready for collection or delivery. For trade and project buyers, volume pricing is available. What is the Difference between Sandstone Tiles and Pavers?

Feature Sandstone Tiles Sandstone Pavers
Thickness (Standard) 15mm or 20mm 30mm
Primary Use Suited for interior use Suited for outdoor applications with moderate foot traffic
Outdoor Use Can be used in low-traffic areas when installed on a concrete base More appropriate for areas with moderate foot traffic

Sandstone tiles in different finishes are suited for interior use. They carry the same tonal warmth and grain variation as the broader sandstone range, making them a consistent material choice across a project. Many also choose sandstone bathroom tiles for their natural texture and warmth.

For exterior ground-level paving that carries regular foot traffic or vehicle load, the 30mm sandstone paver thickness is the appropriate specification. Putting 15mm tiles on an unbound sub-base or in a fully exposed driveway application is the most common cause of surface cracking in sandstone tile installations. We also specialize in custom sizes to fulfill your project requirements.

Why is Sandstone a Reliable Natural Stone Choice?

Three qualities keep sandstone in consistent demand across Australian paving and flooring projects: how it looks, how it performs, and how easy it is to maintain.

How it looks: The grain pattern and mineral content give sandstone pavers a unique appearance and texture, as a result no two tiles are alike. Also, sandstone pavers or tiles create a visual depth that artificial sandstone cannot emulate.

How it performs: Sandstone has been used in construction for centuries. When correctly installed on a stable, prepared sub-base and sealed before use, it resists surface wear, handles regular foot traffic, and holds up well against the weather conditions common across Australia - sun exposure, heavy rain, and coastal humidity. It stays noticeably cooler underfoot than dark stone and concrete alternatives in direct sun, which is a practical quality in the Australian climate.

How much maintenance it takes: Sealed sandstone is genuinely low maintenance. Sweep it, wash it with a pH-neutral cleaner, and reseal every two to three years. The two things that damage sandstone are acid (vinegar, citrus-based cleaners) and neglected sealing. Avoid both and the stone holds its character for a long time.

Sandstone Surface Finishes

The surface finish affects how a sandstone tile or paver looks, how it feels underfoot, and how it performs in different conditions. Stone Centre's sandstone range is available in three principal finishes:

Honed - The stone face is ground to a smooth, consistent matte surface. The natural grain and tonal variation remain visible, but without the texture of a split or sandblasted face. Honed sandstone floor tiles are the most practical choice for interior surfaces, they are easy to sweep and mop, show the stone's grain clearly, and do not trap fine debris the way a split face can. Honed is the finish we see selected most consistently for interior sandstone flooring applications.

Natural Split - Natural split sandstone is produced by cleaving the stone along its natural bedding plane. The result is an irregular, textured face no two pieces are identical. The surface variation is what gives natural split sandstone pavers their organic, hand-laid character. This finish is widely used for exterior paving where surface texture and visual depth matter. Natural split is also forgiving to install because minor edge variation is part of the character rather than a defect.

Sandblasted -Fine abrasive is applied under pressure to the stone face, producing an even, lightly textured surface across the face. The tonal character and grain of the stone come through clearly. Sandblasted sandstone outdoor tiles and pavers perform well in exposed conditions. The even surface texture holds up consistently across large paved areas and provides reliable underfoot character in variable weather.

Sandstone Formats

We stock sandstone in a range of formats and tonal families to suit different project requirements.

Sandstone Outdoor Pavers - The 30mm thickness is suited to ground-level exterior paving that carries consistent foot traffic and weather exposure. Sandstone outdoor pavers are available in natural split and sandblasted finishes across our stocked tonal range.

Sandstone Outdoor Tiles - Suited to cover exterior surfaces and lower-traffic areas when installed on a prepared concrete base. For fully exposed ground-level paving under regular traffic, the 30mm paver thickness is the more appropriate specification.

Sandstone Pool Pavers - The stone stays noticeably cooler than concrete, the natural texture of tumbled, natural split and sandblasted surfaces provides good grip, and the earthy tones sit beautifully against water.

Sandstone as an Indoor Flooring Material

Sandstone flooring brings a refined material warmth to interior surfaces that uniform alternatives do not replicate. The tonal variation across individual sandstone floor tiles formed naturally during the stone's geological development keeps large floor areas visually rich rather than flat.

Sandstone indoor tiles perform well on a prepared concrete subfloor when sealed before installation. When sealed before installation and resealed every two to three years, they are genuinely low maintenance.

Sandstone Installation - What to Know?

Correct installation is the most important factor in the long-term performance of sandstone tiles and pavers. Stone Centre recommends engaging a qualified paving or tiling professional for all installation work. The following gives a general overview of the key stages:

  • Sub-base preparation - A stable, level base is essential before any sandstone tile or paver is laid. For exterior paving, a compacted road base is required. The specific depth and specification are determined by the existing site conditions and the load the surface must support.
  • Bedding – Sandstone tiles and pavers are set into a suitable bedding material. The type and depth are determined by the installer based on the site conditions and surface type.
  • Pre-sealing - Sealing all faces and edges before installation is widely recommended. This protects the stone from staining during the bedding process - a step that is easy to skip and expensive to remedy after installation.
  • Laying and jointing - Joints are filled with an appropriate jointing material once the stone is set. Joint width, pattern and product selection are determined by the installer.
  • Post-installation sealing - A final coat of penetrating natural stone sealer is applied once installation is complete and the surface has been cleaned.

For product-specific guidance, consult a qualified stone installer.

How to maintain Sandstone Tiles and Pavers?

Taking care of your sandstone properly means it will keep its natural character and strength for years to come.

Regular Cleaning - Consistent cleaning is the key to maintaining your sandstone.

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt, sand and debris that could scratch the surface over time.
  • For interior surfaces, a microfibre mop with warm water works without needing harsh chemicals.
  • A weekly hose rinse removes dust, leaves and debris from exterior pavers. This basic step prevents staining and keeps the stone looking natural throughout every season.

Deep Cleaning - Give sandstone tiles and pavers a thorough clean periodically.

  • Mix a pH-neutral stone cleaner with warm water
  • Do not use any acidic cleaners such as vinegar and lemon juice because they erode the stone.
  • Apply in small sections with a mop or soft brush.
  • Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow it to dry.

Stain Protection - Regular sealing every two to three years creates a barrier from spills and weathering. Pick a breathable stone sealer that keeps liquids out but lets moisture escape. If there is a spillage, blot up the spill but avoid wiping.

Weed Control - Check joints between sandstone pavers periodically and remove any weed or moss growth promptly. Left unattended, roots can work into the joints and gradually displace the stone.

Seasonal Maintenance - In rainy weather, ensure proper drainage of water near exterior sandstone surfaces.

Professional Maintenance - A periodic professional inspection can catch minor sealer wear before it becomes a problem.
