About Marble Pavers & Tiles

Marble has been constantly shaping traditional as well as contemporary architectural designs across Australia for centuries.

What is Marble?

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is subjected to extreme heat and pressure deep within the earth's crust. That process recrystallises the calcium carbonate in the rock, producing the dense, hard material with the distinctive veining patterns that marble is known for.

The veining itself forms as mineral impurities move through the stone during recrystallisation. Because this happens differently in every deposit, no two marble tiles or pavers carry the same vein pattern.

Marble is resistant to chipping and cracking when correctly installed, handles heat well, and has been used in construction across Australia and around the world for centuries.

Marble Tiles vs. Marble Pavers - What Is the Difference?

The practical difference comes down to thickness and what that means for where each product can be used.

Specification Marble Tiles Marble Pavers
Thickness (Standard) 12 mm or 15mm or 20mm 30mm
Load capacity Suited to lower-traffic and interior floor applications Suited to ground-level exterior paving under regular foot traffic
Setting method Mortar bed over prepared concrete subfloor Sand-over-road-base or mortar bed over concrete slab
Typical use Interior floors, wall cladding, feature surfaces Exterior ground-level paving, driveways

Marble tiles are the right choice for interior marble flooring on a prepared subfloor. They are also suited to exterior wall applications and covered exterior surfaces where the substrate is a concrete slab. For open ground-level paving that will take regular foot traffic or vehicle load, the 30mm marble paver thickness is recommended. Putting tiles on an unbound sub-base or using them for a driveway is the fastest way to crack them. We also specialize in custom sizes to fulfill your project requirements.

What Makes Marble a Reliable Natural Stone Choice?

Three things matter when you are choosing a natural stone for a paving or flooring project: how it looks, how it performs, and how much work it takes to keep it looking right.

How it looks: Marble has a tonal depth and vein movement that manufactured alternatives do not replicate. The variation between individual tiles, something that exists because each piece of marble stone flooring came from a different part of the same geological deposit is what gives large marble flooring installations their visual richness.

How it performs: Marble has been used in construction for centuries. When correctly installed on a stable substrate and sealed properly, it handles regular use without surface degradation. It stays cool underfoot in warm weather, which is practically useful in Australian conditions. It is harder than sandstone and more resistant to surface wear than travertine.

How much maintenance it takes: Sealed marble is low maintenance. Sweep it, clean it with a pH-neutral cleaner, and reseal every two to three years. The two things that damage marble are acid (anything citrus or vinegar-based) and neglected sealing. Avoid both and the stone will hold its character for a long time.

These properties make natural marble stone tiles and marble paving a consistently specified choice across both interior and exterior applications in Australia.

Marble Surface Finishes

The finish you choose affects how the stone looks, how it feels underfoot, and how it performs in different conditions. Stone Centre's marble range is available in four finishes:

Honed - The stone face is ground to a smooth, consistent matte finish. The veining is sharp and clear. No gloss, no reflectivity. Honed marble floor tiles are the most practical choice for interior flooring as they are easy to clean, show the stone's veining clearly, and do not show surface scratches the way a polished finish does.

Tumbled - The stone is mechanically tumbled to soften edges and surfaces, giving it the appearance of stone that has worn naturally over time. The surface has a gentle texture and the edges are rounded rather than sharp. Tumbled marble tiles work well where an aged, informal character is part of what you are going for. They are also forgiving to cut and lay because the soft edge hides minor chipping.

Sandblasted - Fine abrasive is applied under pressure to the stone face, producing an even, lightly textured surface. The veining and tonal character of the stone come through clearly. Sandblasted marble outdoor flooring and pavers are a practical choice for exterior surfaces where a textured, non-reflective face is suitable for the conditions.

Antique - A combination of brushing and tumbling produces a surface that looks and feels like stone that has aged naturally over decades. The finish softens the veining slightly and gives the stone a warm, textured character. Antique marble tiling is frequently chosen for traditional or heritage-influenced design directions, and for projects where a new surface needs to sit comfortably alongside existing older materials.

Choosing the Right Marble Flooring

Marble flooring is one of the most consistent natural stone choices across Australian residential and commercial projects. The material's characteristic veining, tonal variation and cool underfoot surface have kept marble flooring in steady demand for generations.

Marble floor tiles come in 12mm, 15mm and 20mm thickness. The thinner option is suited to wall applications and lighter-use applications. For ground-level interior flooring, thicker tiles give you better structural integrity under regular foot traffic. On a well-prepared concrete subfloor, both medium and thicker marble floor tiles handle everyday residential use.

If you are specifying marble for an exterior ground-level surface that will carry consistent foot traffic or any vehicle load, you need the 30mm paver thickness. Using tiles in those conditions is the most common reason marble paving installations fail.

Stone Centre's marble floor tile range is available in multiple variants across our stocked tonal families and finishes. Our marble tiles flooring range spans honed, tumbled, sandblasted and antique finishes across grey, white and beige tonal families, giving you a genuine choice to choose.

Sealing Marble Floor Tiles

Marble is porous. Every marble floor tile should be dip-sealed, all faces and edges before it goes down. This protects the stone from staining during the bedding process. After installation and grouting, apply a second coat of penetrating natural stone sealer to the completed surface. Reseal every two to three years. Neglecting sealing is the single most common cause of staining on marble flooring installations. Whether you are installing marble stone flooring in a residential setting or specifying marble tiles for a commercial project, sealing is not optional. It is the single step that determines long-term surface performance.

Marble Tiling - Installation Overview

Installing marble correctly is the most important factor in long-term performance. The steps below give a general overview. We always recommend engaging a qualified tiler or paving professional for all marble installation work.

  • Sub-base preparation - A stable, level base is essential before any marble tile or paver is laid. Specific requirements depend on site conditions and the installer's assessment.
  • Bedding - Marble pavers and tiles are set into suitable bedding material, determined by the installer based on surface type and setting conditions.
  • Pre-sealing - Sealing all faces and edges before installation is widely recommended to protect the stone during the laying process.
  • Laying and jointing - Joints are filled with an appropriate jointing material once the stone is set. Joint width, pattern and product selection are determined by the installer.
  • Post-installation sealing - A final coat of penetrating natural stone sealer is applied once installation is complete and the surface has been cleaned.

Correct marble tiling practice varies depending on surface type, setting conditions and the product being installed. For product-specific guidance, consult a qualified stone installer.

How to Clean & Maintain Marble Surface

Marble is not high maintenance, but it does need the right care. Most problems with marble flooring and paving come down to two things: using the wrong cleaner or leaving the sealer too long before refreshing it.

Routine cleaning

  • Sweep or dust regularly to prevent grit build-up. Grit underfoot acts like sandpaper on honed marble surfaces over time.
  • Wash with a pH-neutral stone cleaner diluted in warm water. Apply with a soft mop or brush, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Blot spills immediately - do not wipe, as that spreads the liquid.
  • Allow the marble surface to dry fully after mopping. Sustained moisture on an unsealed or under-sealed marble surface will mark it.

Sealing

  • Select a penetrating natural stone sealer suited to marble.
  • Dip-seal all faces and edges before installation.
  • Allow at least 24 hours of curing time after sealing before the stone is installed.
  • Reseal the completed surface every two to three years. More frequently for surfaces in heavy use or high-moisture environments.

What not to use on marble

  • Anything acidic - vinegar, citrus-based cleaners, lemon juice, low-pH bathroom cleaners. Acid etches the marble surface permanently.
  • Bleach or ammonia-based products.
  • Abrasive scrubbing pads or steel wool on honed or antique finishes.
  • Generic household sealers - these are not formulated for stone porosity and can lock moisture into the surface.
